A player received a 14-day suspension for typing “ggwp <3!” in chat, apparently to congratulate his teammates or his opponents for providing him with a well-fought game of League of Legends.
This stirred up an uproar among Reddit users in /r leagueoflegends due to the obvious injustice delivered to the said player. Some even sacaristically remarked that he was banned for being “too nice” for League of Legends’s usual standard of toxicity, while many others expressed condolence for his misfortune of being wrongly on the receiving end of Riot’s over two centuries of collective experience in managing its gaming community.
League of Legends itself has been an ever growing game since its debut in 2009, and as the game ascends to its peak, so does the community. Toxicity remains an issue plaguing the game, but the report system seems to pose more of a nuisance according to the opinion among the playerbase. Inting players are not usually punished accordingly, and there are people who are wrongly penalized for offenses they did commit or for words that are not offensive.
This player wasn’t the only case of the “ingenuity” of Riot’s report system. A professional player, Hai, who was in C9’s roster, was also banned unreasonably, sparking outrage from his fanbase as well as the entire League community. Perhaps this is a wake-up call for those working at the over a decade old company to do something with the heavily flawed system.
