It seems that Flash is an extraordinary legacy of League of Legends throughout the years.
League of Legends has reached its 11th season and is currently considered to be one of the most popular Esports titles ever. In fact, this MOBA game has undergone many changes and improvements throughout the years in order to evolve to what it is now. Including the releasing of new champions, reworks, items overhaul, as well as summoner spells, all are on the continuous adjustment list in order to develop and make the game more balanced.
Flash, however, seems to be a summoner spell that sits on the sidelines of the daily update. Specifically, for over an 8-year time, Flash has not had any direct changes other than a minor update on icon and new sound effects. The last time Flash was mentioned in a Patch note was in the earliest patches of the game, released on December 4, 2012. In Patch1.0.0.152, the dev raised its cooldown from 265 seconds to 300 seconds.
During the same time period, Heal has been reworked one time and has been adjusted six times. On the other hand, Teleport also had its cooldown and channeling time adjusted up to seven times. Even a summoner spell that only appears in ARAM mode-Clarity had a major change in patch 6.12 as its cooldown increased, with extra self-healing, and reduced mana buffs for allies.
Although it hasn’t been changed for a long time, Flash is an essential spell used by most League players in every match. Fundamentally, Flash has no damage or regeneration since its effect only allows the champion to shift within a limited range. Therefore its usefulness depends solely on the user, hence there is no reason for Riot to buff or nerf this spell.
Being one of the core features of League of Legends, Flash has a huge effect on the existing gameplay, changing Flash would cause many unforeseen implications on the meta of the game. If Flash is going to have some adjustments, there is indeed a high chance that the gameplay will also shift partially in another way.
Basically, Flash doesn’t break the balance of the game, as it has a great impact on the gameplay and the habits of the majority of League players, so it doesn’t have to be targeted. There seems to be a high possibility that Riot Games will not make any changes to this summoner spell unless they intend to completely overhaul the gameplay of League of Legends one more time.
