A Chinese LoL player lost a lawsuit in which he attempted to recoup more than $22,000 he spent for a female player hired via an app to play with him.
According to Guangzhou Daily posted on Weibo, a League of Legends gamer spent a huge amount of money to find a female League player through an app to play with him. The woman gamer insisted on not dating him, though, so he decided to file a lawsuit to recoup more than $22,000 he spent.
Specifically, a Chinese man named Xiao Jun paid $22,000 for in-app registration fees as well as gifts for the female League player-for-hire, named Xiao Mei. The process starts from November 2019 to April 2020, Xiao Jun in turn spent nearly 72,400 Yuan (more than 11 thousand dollars) to buy gifts and tried to convince Xiao Mei for a date. Xiao Mei first refused the invitation and also Xiao Jun’s presents, but she was unable to refuse when this guy sent a gift by post.
They continued to play League of Legends together, but Xiao Mei was quite offended when friends of Xiao Jun called her the Jun wife concurrently. It was the straw that broke the camel’s back, causing Xiao Mei to terminate the “play services” she was provided through the app. It was now Xiao Jun’s turn to be irritated since he had lost a large amount of money to a girl he had never met.
As a result, at Xiangtan Yuhu District People’s Court, he sued Mei for “the unjust enrichment” to get back the money he had spent. The court, however, concluded that both parties were tied by a “service contract relationship” through the app and that Xiao Jun’s gift-donating was voluntary rather than coerced by the female player.
The fact that Xiao Jun lost the case, as well as the huge money, should serve as a caution to other gamers not to fall in love with a friend they met online.
