The Arcane showrunner recently shared that the Netflix series is only the “first step” for Riot Games, and that they’re already working on multiple new League of Legends projects.
The League of Legends Netflix series Arcane has been a huge success with fans of the game, as well as critics, and even won three Emmy Awards in 2022. It has brought League of Legends to a wider audience and has opened the door for new storytelling opportunities in the game’s universe.
Before the release of the series finale, Arcane co-creator and showrunner Christian Linke spoke with ComicBook, explaining that Riot has “a bunch of new fallout projects” planned, each set in the League of Legends world.
These upcoming shows will “tell more stories” across different regions of League of Legends and explore new characters from the game. According to Linke, these projects will each have their own unique style and feel, similar to the approach taken by major franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Linke said that some of the new projects will be “more whimsical,” while others will have a darker, more serious tone. He described Arcane as just the “first step” in a much larger storytelling vision for Riot Games, hinting at a broad range of tones and styles to come.
Although Linke kept details about which League of Legends characters and stories will be featured under wraps, he did mention an interest in exploring the “whimsical corner” of the League of Legends world, with a specific aim to expand that lighter side of the game’s universe.
While League of Legends as a game includes many lighthearted characters and moments, Arcane has focused on the darker side of the universe. The show explores how the city of Piltover, despite its wealth and beauty, harbors an underworld of crime and corruption. By examining the gritty lives of characters like Vi and Jinx, Arcane reveals the challenges faced by those in the lower parts of Piltover.
Linke also noted that while Arcane presents the League of Legends universe in a darker tone, there is still “enough for our audience in that particular tonality,” and Riot is “very excited about doing more” with other tones and types of stories.
The much-anticipated second season of Arcane, which will also be the show’s final season, is set to launch in November 2024. The first three episodes will release on November 9, followed by the next three on November 16, and finally, the last episode will air on November 23.
