In a Reddit AMA recently, the League of Legends development team discussed the challenges and joys of working on Arena, League’s newest gamemode.
Some of the hundreds of questions and responses hinted at a bright future for Arena, giving fans optimism that this mode will be permanently added to the game.
It’s no wonder that the latest game mode has immediately become a popular choice among players, who have long requested additional ways to play their favourite game.
Will Arena become a permanent game mode in League?
Many people asked Riot if Arena will be a permanent feature to the game, and the mode’s developer team responded.
“From a technical perspective we approached this mode as if it could be permanent, which is a little different than we have done in the past within engineering.”
This choice would also make it easy to restore Arena to the client if Riot decides to remove it after the Summer event.
Other statements from the development team also underscored Riot’s view of the gamemode as a long-term effort rather than a one-time event. From the looks of it, it seems that the gamemode is going to be in League for a while.
What’s more, Riot Games is keeping a careful eye on how many people are taking advantage of the limited-time queue—and they’re gauging the mode’s future depending on how players interact with it. On July 24, head studio Andrei “Meddler” van Roon informed fans that the metrics gathered would be used to determine it’s destiny.
“We’re going to need to see how engagement with Arena trends… before we can make any commitments regarding its future,”
While Riot has not yet made the announcement of turning it into a permanent gamemode, and there is no indication that it will be a regular event for League players to enjoy every year, it is clear that the community’s desire goes in that direction.
