C9 coach Mithy on why League system is unfair to Western teams

According to the coach, the western teams have no chance of winning the world championship because of this unbalanced League system.

Cloud9, the last participant of the Western team at Worlds 2021, was eliminated yesterday on October 25, after losing 0-3 against Gen.G. Cloud9 coach Mithy spoke out after the loss about the “injustice” that teams from the Western face. The coach even stated that LCS and LEC teams can only progress if the entire professional system is altered.

“I think that the way League system designed is extremely unfair. The Korean teams get to scream against LPL, LJL and we’re hard stuck in either EU or NA. So, for the Western team to do well we’d have to bootcamp in Korea for a while and then do a tournament but that’s like just very hard because we have to play a lot of useless games.”

“Generally speaking, it would be very hard, long-term for a western team to do well unless the tournament system changes.”

Mithy’s objections are reasonable given the infrequent opportunities for Western teams to play against good teams from the LCK and LPL.

Under the present arrangement, an LCS or LEC team gets only a maximum of two opportunities to compete in international events (MSI and Worlds) and practice with teams from other regions. This is critical when it comes to assisting players in gaining more experience in order to perform at a higher level.

Cloud9 leaves Worlds at Quarterfinal

Western teams will have to devote a significant amount of time to compete in the spring and summer tournaments under the present league system. As a result, Western teams will perform poorly, while the LCK and LPL representatives remain strong. The most prominent example is Worlds 2021, when four teams in the semifinals have three LCK representatives and one LPL.

The quality of the Western team is deteriorating for LEC or LCS teams, causing them to get increasingly entangled and unable to improve quickly.

Riot Games will not, of course, change the league system that they have worked so hard to develop over the years. Instead of depending on Riot Games, Western teams may need to do more to boost their strength.

G2 Esports win an international title MSI 2019

As for the current state, it will be a long time before a Western team wins any international titles.
