Champ Select Reporting Is Fine, It Will Be Even Better If Reporting Mattered

Earlier this month, Riot Games is running fast-iteration experiments on live servers to more quickly adapt to behavioral trends in patches 10.13 and 10.14, and is running a two-patch champ-select reporting and muting experiment. Around 10.13 launches, it will start with NA and KR, and expand this scope of experiments.

The goal of champ select reporting is to gain a better understanding of how often different types of negative behaviors occur in champ select, and the different impacts they have in the game (winning chance, in-game reporting rate, etc.). Champ Select Reporting’s initial version is not tied to our penalty structures. When this experiment is over, Riot will use the report data as a second iteration to prepare future investment in a penalty system.

Champ select reporting, however, will lead to mute players still troll picking, forcing you to either dodge or play a terrible game in hopes that Riot will eventually ban them.

“I don’t want Champ Select Reporting. I want reporting to matter.

All Champ Select reporting is going to do is make is so your teammates can’t use buzzwords in champ select or the automated system will catch them. Much like in current games of league, silence won’t ban you. If my teammate just says nothing, then locks in clarity cleanse Singed ADC during champ select, whatever the reason, then either I dodge or have a terrible time just so I can report him post game.

If it’s ranked, I’m dodging every time. Reporting him for trolling will likely only matter if I decide to waste 15+ minutes of my time so that Riot can see his summs and stats in the post game, and even then, I don’t have much faith in the report system to ban this person as consistently as I’d like.

This article has received a lot of attention from the LoL community, obviously, it can not avoid a number of different opinions.

What is the point of champ select reporting if it doesn’t do anything? I think both are good to have but one is clearly of a far higher priority than the other. Adding more report features without a real punishment system is pointless.

I think it’s a bit funny people ask for champ select reporting (quite a few reddit posts ranging to 7 years ago) and then when we finally get it, we don’t really want it anymore and want something different.

Personally I do wish reporting mattered a bit more but at least we got something.

hey why not both

According to Riot’s latest announcement, the current Champion Select reporting is only being used to collect data so that they can improve their system to actually do something about reporting. Reporting people in champ select does nothing at this time, but they use it to gather data so that they can set up a system that can correctly identify legitimate reports and grievances in champ selection.

They are doing it as a trial because they want to see how people use it. For instance, there’s an “unskilled player” category put in. Seems really stupid, how can you know if they are unskilled? They are using that to track how many people report based on looking at op.gg and saying “OMG this guy has a 40% winrate on X champ, they’re trolling!”

I think it’s a step in the right direction. How many toxic people that ruin champ select and don’t get reported because there isn’t an option for it right now. Also, banning people that purposely int, troll, afk, and other behaviors that ruin games would help a lot too. It shouldn’t be everything goes except for “you said a bad word,” or you where mean to a player even though they are literally speed running for the next death or sitting in base just typing.

Soon the reports will really matter and that is the whole aim of champion select reporting’s new iteration. It needs accurate user feedback and it is in your best interest to report individuals who you think actually need to be reported in champ select and maybe even edge cases, even if the reports do nothing at this point.
