Gen.G will represent Korea’s LCK at the 2022 League of Legends World Championship. With a victory over Liiv SANDBOX earlier today in the semifinal round of the LCK Summer Playoffs, the top team from the Summer Split guaranteed their spot at Worlds.
Gen.G took a commanding two-game lead over SANDBOX in the current series before losing the last game. In game four, GenG retaliated with a commanding 22-minute victory, shutting the door on any chance of a SANDBOX reverse sweep. With a final set score of 15/4/37, GenG mid laner Chovy earned a KDA of 13.0 for the whole game, which was by far the highest of all 10 players.
With their victory over SANDBOX, Gen.G progressed to the LCK postseason championship game. GenG has collected enough championship points thanks to their top-two finish in the Summer Split and a second-place result in the Spring Split to guarantee that they won’t fall short of the required number to automatically qualify for Worlds. The team won’t have to compete in either the LCK regional finals or the Worlds play-in round thanks to Gen.G’s championship point total, which is more essential.
In the LCK, the team with the most championship points that have not previously qualified for Worlds by winning the Summer Split will do so by virtue of their overall championship point total. Even if GenG loses the LCK championship game next week, they would still have 170 championship points at the end of the season, more than any other club in the league that would also be aiming to qualify through points.
During the LCK regional finals later this year, the teams who finished third through sixth in championship points will compete for a final chance to compete at Worlds. Liiv SANDBOX lost in the playoffs, but they will still have an opportunity to compete in the event that follows the LCK grand finals for one of the four LCK seeds at Worlds.
The semifinal game between T1 and DWG KIA will take place tomorrow on the opposing side of the playoff bracket. On August 28, the LCK grand finals will take place, and Gen.G will be waiting for the victor of that series.
