The LCK informed that Fredit BRION had forfeited its match against Gen.G, which was planned for March 16
Because their whole main roster tested positive for COVID-19 last week, the organization was obliged to bring in emergency replacements. The league said in the release that two of the organization’s emergency players had also tested positive for COVID-19, preventing it from fielding a full team. Thus, Fredit BRION had to forfeit the match, according to LCK.
In South Korea, where there is a continuing COVID-19 epidemic, teams have been required to use substitutes when their main roster test positive for COVID-19. However, this is the first time a team has been forced to forfeit.
Under normal conditions, the match would be rescheduled for a later date, however, this is not possible due to the upcoming playoffs. According to a statement issued by the LCK, a match cannot be postponed if it cannot be resumed by the Thursday before the playoffs. This is to prohibit any team from playing consecutive matches or doubleheaders.
Finally, due to a high possibility of tiebreakers, the league opted not to schedule the match on the final day of the regular season. As a result, the team was forced to forfeit the match due to a lack of participants. Their opponents, Gen.G, will be considered to have won with a score 2-0.
The decision to forfeit the match against Gen.G on March 16th might have long-term consequences for Fredit BRION. The LCK playoffs will be contested by the top six teams in the league. With a 7-9 record, the team might easily be pushed down to seventh place by Kwangdong Freecs and KT Rolster.
