League community conflict over Worlds 2022 Summoner’s Cup

Riot Games and Tiffany & Co. collaborated to remodel the famous Summoner’s Cup, which serves as the prize for League of Legends’ World Championship. During the LCK 2021 Summer Finals, they also launched commemorative rings with the players’ name carved on them.

According to Riot Games, the trophy is now “made of sterling silver, fine silver, stainless steel, brass, and wood.” The new Summoner’s Cup has a more ergonomic shape and five handles, one for each winning player to grasp and hoist the prize.

Tiffany & Co.’s design of the trophy has received varied comments from the League of Legends and gaming communities since its first appearance on August 29.

League community shows mixed feedback on the new Summoner’s Cup

Erik “DoA” Lonnquist, former LCK casters, concurred that the visual design lacks character and “doesn’t feel ‘gamer’ anymore.”

G2 Esports, a League of Legends European Championship (LEC) team, even cursed themselves ahead of Worlds 2022 by placing their roster’s names at the base of the cup among former champions FunPlus Phoenix, Damwon Gaming, and Edward Gaming.

Redditors were more accepting of the move and commended it for its clean, simple design.  They admired the trophy’s new exquisite embellishments, which included player role symbols on top of each handle as well as the winning teams and players over the years.

The cup once had a more flamboyant appearance, with blue diamonds and carvings of veiled summoners on its body.
