Riot Games hosts two major international tournaments each year, one is Worlds, and the other is the Mid-season invitational. MSI is a scaled-down version of Worlds, with competitors often coming from several regional leagues throughout the world
Riot Games officially confirmed on March 30, 2022, that this year’s MSI will be held in Busan, South Korea. This is the country’s first-time hosting MSI, however, it has previously hosted Worlds in 2014 and 2018.
When it comes to competitive League of Legends, South Korea is one of the most dominated regions in the entire Worlds, most noticeable is T1 with their unbeatable win strike in the LCK Spring Group stage. So, it will be interesting to observe how the European, American, and Chinese teams do.
MSI tournament format
MSI 2022 will begin on May 10, and the finals will take place on May 29. This is the first time a major international League of Legends event has been hosted in front of a live audience since 2019. The event will take place in the Bexco Exhibition Hall, and tickets will be available soon.
MSI 2022 will be separated into three stages. Spring Split champions from 11 different areas (excluding LCL regions) will compete for the title. The group stages will take place between May 10 and May 15. There will be a total of three groups. The group’s teams will compete in a best-of-one double round-robin format.
The tournament’s second stage is known as the rumble stage. This round will take place between May 18 and May 22. The top two teams from each of the previous groups will be chosen and played against each other. These teams will have to play in a best-of-one double round-robin format until only four teams remain.
Finally, the knockout rounds will take place between May 27 and May 29. During this time, the last four teams will play one best-of-five game against each other until only two teams remain. The remaining two teams will play in the finals for the title of League of Legends MSI 2022 champion.
With that being said, best teams from all around the world will begin their tournament on May 10 and fans will have a chance to watch them live in Busan.
