League of Legends: Are skins becoming more and more similar?

League players are concerned that the recent skins are too identical, arguing that Riot Games isn’t putting visual clarity in new skins lately

With approximately 1,000 skins available in League, it’s easy to see how hard it would be to come up with new and visually stunning concepts for 157 champions in the game.  Riot Games has even let fans participate in for suggestions, in which champions should get VGU updates.

Fans are now concerned that new skin lines are crossing the line in terms of visual clarity, and that they are starting to seem similar.

League players are unsatisfied with the new skins

A Reddit post discussing complaints about new skins seeming too similar to each other went viral.

The comment criticized Riot’s use of skins in thematics, stating skins were more simple back then but more specialized in a thematic.

Both skins have similar VFX

The report also brought attention to the absence of unique VFX between skin lines, citing the examples of Lagoon Dragon Kai’Sa and Crystal Rose Zyra, whose skills had similar identification.

In particular, commenters in the post also pointed about 2 specific skins, Thunder Dragon Lee Sin and an Ezreal skin, both have nearly the same Q effect, making it hard for players to tell if it is “a ton of dmg or a lee sin on the face in mid-air”.

The significance of clarity in LoL is the ability to grasp what’s occurring in League and respond to it.  Since League is so competitive, this is obviously critical. Riot games even claim this early on the year, stating that they’ve made to enhance aesthetics in champion design, skins, and hitboxes.

Despite the fact that this provides some insight into their design process, players have expressed worries about difficulties with the updated skin lines.
