League of Legends: Champion Mastery is being changed in 2024

In League of Legends, players often showcase their mastery of their favorite champions through various means. Yet, Riot Games deems the existing one insufficient, expressing a commitment to exploring enhancements that will impart players in 2024.

LoL devs making Champion Mastery more rewarding

In a comprehensive blog post dated December 11, the developer addressed its intention to refine the Champion Mastery system, aiming to provide more substantial rewards to players who invest time and dedication into a single champion.

Acknowledging the shortcomings of the current Mastery system, Riot Games is set on revamping it to better recognize and reward the dedication of players.

Currently, players accrue XP by participating in matches, alongside the accumulation of Mastery points specific to the champion they’ve chosen. Upon reaching certain point milestones, players unlock Mastery Levels, with the loftiest tiers such as Executioner and Deathmaster demanding a substantial number of points and S tokens, the latter awarded for exceptional performances.

While the existing system has been in place for several years, some players attained the highest levels long ago with their main champions. In 2022, Riot Games introduced Eternals as a fresh dimension to showcase mastery, focusing on specific in-game statistics. However, Eternals did not achieve the anticipated success and come at a cost, unlike the complimentary Mastery Levels.

Undeterred, Riot Games is set to explore innovative approaches to amplify the rewards for players who have dedicated hours to a specific character. Nevertheless, player reactions to these proposed changes appear to be mixed, reflecting a sense of cautious optimism.

The developer outlined its commitment to enhancing the Mastery system in a blog post that delves into the core strengths of League of Legends’ business model.

With Champion Mastery positioned as a way to honor and reward players for their extensive time investment in the game, Riot Games also alluded to time-limited rewards and items as additional tools in their arsenal for enriching the overall player experience.
