Riot began implementing significant adjustments to League of Legends’ Ranked system in 2023. We went to a two-split structure in Ranked 2023, which resulted in significant modifications.

However, as shown in a recent dev blog, Riot is not done with Ranked. The blog describes the modifications to the rank system that will take effect in 2024. There are numerous significant changes in 2024, including three splits staring the next season.

Massive changes coming to League of Legends ranked 2024

For starters, the current ranked season will stay open throughout the whole year, with the typical November-December “preseason” section of the season being removed. Any major modifications to the game that would have been applied during the preseason portion of the ranked will now be implemented at the start of January 2024.

Furthermore, players will be able to participate in three unique ranked splits throughout the year, instead of the existing two splits.

This season, the ranked League received a “split” structure, with the 2023 season including two different parts of play. These splits functioned similarly to past full-fledged season in that players had to play through games after receiving a soft reset to their rank.

Why did Riot implement this?

Riot chose this new approach because they want to improve player engagement and believe that this new system will achieve so. They also believe that this will allow players to take off from a single split rather than waiting until the end of the year.

Riot intends to use this technique to create a more balanced system, and it will be fascinating to see if it succeeds. They hope the system will increase player involvement, improve balance, and so on.

Also, more splits equal more rewards, and maybe more Victorious skins. Because there is no downtime for ranked, players can always queue up for ranked games.

Riot will undoubtedly work out the system, and we hope that this will be beneficial to all players, not just those that grind continuously. Hopefully, the system will be released without trouble.

Ranked will take place throughout the year, with Split 1 beginning on January 9, 2024. Split 2 will begin in May 2024, and Split 3 will begin in September 2024. Each Split will last four months, resulting in a year-round Ranked system for League of Legends.
