LoL: New Champion Mastery has finally been revealed

Riot Games has officially announced a significant overhaul of the Mastery system in League of Legends, a feature that has been part of the game for nearly a decade.

Previously, the Mastery system served as a Blue Essence sink and did not fully capture the essence of a player’s proficiency with specific champions. In 2024, Riot is revamping the system to better reflect the time and effort invested in mastering a single champion.

One major change is the removal of the cap on Mastery levels. In other words, reaching Mastery level seven will no longer mark the end of a player’s journey with a champion, allowing for continuous progression and recognition of expertise.

The Mastery system is also introducing a new element called Marks of Mastery, which replaces the S-grade tokens used to unlock champion mastery. Unlike permanent S-grade tokens, Marks of Mastery are linked to specific champions and League splits. Initially earned by achieving high grades on favored champions, Riot plans to expand the ways players can obtain Marks of Mastery in the future.

While the revamped Mastery system may seem complex, its fundamental operation remains the same. Players will earn mastery scores by playing games and now also have Marks of Mastery available through a new reward track for each champion.

Levels one to four won’t require Marks of Mastery, but for levels five to nine, one is needed, and for levels 10 and above, two are required. Importantly, for seasoned players, Mastery scores will not reset, and all previously earned points will seamlessly transition into the new system.

The most significant change is the shift to split-specific Mastery, departing from the previous permanent structure. Each League champion will have a distinct five-milestone reward track for every split, requiring players to consistently achieve high grades to progress and unlock rewards.
