LoL will have a new rank MMR system in 2024 – Riot confirmed

After more than a decade, Riot Games has officially announced a significant shift for League of Legends rank by introducing a new ranked MMR system in the upcoming year.

This shift also includes a subsequent transition to Microsoft’s advanced “TrueSkill 2” system, marking a comprehensive backend overhaul throughout Season 2024.

RiotIksar, a developer at Riot, shared comprehensive insights on the League subreddit, outlining the game developer’s ambitious plans for a complete revamp of the backend infrastructure in the coming season.

The initial change is set to kick off at the start of 2024, with a follow-up system slated for implementation later in the year. This strategic approach aims to address challenges like players being stuck in ELO hell, allowing them to benefit from a temporary proprietary system while developers fine-tune the new choice behind the scenes.

Already, Iksar has confirmed that there are immediate changes awaiting players as the new ranked season commences next week. Among these adjustments, new accounts are expected to be more accurately placed on the ranked ladder.

Additionally, other modifications have been implemented to reduce instances where players fall into a negative LP state.

The upcoming shift to ‘TrueSkill 2’, a system developed by Microsoft, signifies a more comprehensive and sophisticated approach to evaluating players’ in-game skills.

Unlike the traditional method of calculating MMR based solely on wins and losses, TrueSkill 2 considers a myriad of factors, such as player experience, in-game tendencies, kill counts, propensity to quit, and various gameplay aspects.

This holistic approach takes overall performance into account, determining the amount of LP gained or lost based on a broader spectrum of gameplay elements, rather than a simplistic outcome-based rating adjustment.

While the exact timeline for the implementation of the ‘TrueSkill 2’ system remains uncertain, summoners can anticipate more updates as the new season approaches.

The promise of these groundbreaking changes adds an element of anticipation and excitement for the League of Legends community, highlighting the commitment of Riot Games to evolve and enhance the experience for its player base.
