Format Changes

Significant changes to the League of Legends World Championship’s structure for 2023 have been revealed by Riot Games.

The fourth seeds from each area will compete in a preliminary competition known as the “Worlds Qualifying Series” in which the best-of-five games will be played.

The group stage will be replaced with a Swiss-style format with 16 teams, while the play-in round will have two convergent brackets with best-of-three matches. There will be five rounds of competition, and teams with identical records will face off.

The knockout stage will continue to be a single-elimination best-of-five format with no alterations.

The modifications are meant to guarantee that every Worlds game has significance and reduce the number of elimination games that have no bearing on the final standings.
