Why Renekton is currently the lowest win rate top lane champion at Worlds 2020?

Some experts even consider Renekton as a “bad pick” for big Tournaments like Worlds 2020.

After two days of play in the group stage of Worlds 2020, we have the first sight of the “good” champions that have been used in this tournament. Of course, in the top lane, Ornn is still the most dominant name with a 75 percent win rate, a 94 percent pick and ban rate record. This “goat god” has so much power overall, which gives the viewers a sense of advantage for the team that has Orn in their ban and picks phrase.

As for our central character, Renekton, he also has a desirable pick-and-ban rate of 87.5% (6 times selected, 8 times banned in the last matches). Many teams also gave priority in picking this champion first during the first and second phrase in the draft lineup. They all agree that Renekton will be able to win any top laner in the early game. However, Renekton ‘s win rate is incredibly pitiful because he has only won a single game in the Worlds 2020 group stage.

The first explanation is that the majority of teams that use Renekton are in fact, a lot weaker compared to their rivals. Unicorns of Love, PSG Talon, or Team SoloMid are all overshadowed by DragonX, Rogue, and Gen. G, so it’s understandable that Renekton can’t win in those games.

Suning’s loss yesterday was indeed particularly regrettable, as Mikyx had an outstanding day with Bard. This guy also saved G2 Esports from a noticeable loss and he was really good at controlling combats, so it’s hard to fault Bin for his Renekton.

The case of Langx in the match between LGD Gaming and Gen.G showed all the drawbacks of this champion: his ability to move in combats is incredibly limited. As in the match, Gen.G had three roles: Gragas, Sett or Volibear, all having skills that can keep Renekton from engaging their carry extremely well.

Right after he got stunned by Volibear, Renekton contiously took damage from both Ashe and Lucian.

Whenever Langx use his E to engage, he immediately got caught by tons of CCs and thus, got kited by both Ashe and Lucian. The fact that he has good scaling in the match could not help him engage or do any damage in the entire game.

Langx got CC-ed and kited by both Lucian and Ashe in this combat.

As a result, Langx’s entire early-game advantage was not converted into combat strength. When the strongest player of LGD was unable to deal any damage, and their formation got countered to hard, it is reasonable that the LPL representative had to suffer a loss

Renekton can’t deal damage efficiently in combats

Basically, Renekton’s weakness is all about combats, his way to engage combats is too simple and can be countered easily. Moreover, for professional teams, who have the ability to coordinate and support each other extremely well, they can easily prevent Renekton’s engaging situations and defend their carries.

It is worth mentioning here that every team must know about his weaknesses, but, Renekton is still often picked, even for first picks, if possible. The reason is that this champion does not reveal tactics, when all strong the picks are banned, picking Renekton is the best way to probe the opponent’s drafting stratergy. Moreover, Renekton’s strength is good laning, while in some case, winning lane is what it’s all about in that matchup.

Renekton has good GPM and DPM stats, but his lack of mobility in combats results in such low win rate.

Essentially, Renekton is not weak – if you don’t want to say that he is currently too strong. However, the general style of play after 2 days of Worlds 2020 group stage is to concentrate on 5v5 fights, which has restricted Renekton ‘s strength. This results in such a poor win rate for Renekton in the current Worlds 2020.

Maybe we need to wait a little longer for strong teams to study and come up with play styles that equal Renekton ‘s strength, instead of getting mixed up in team fights and losing like we’ve seen so far in the tournament.
