Instead of deleting All Chat, Riot might consider other methods to prevent toxic behavior in the game

Riot’s recent announcement that All chat in League of Legends would be removed has provoked controversy in the community.

Riot announced earlier last week that the chat feature (chat /all) in the matching system will be removed in League of Legends’ forthcoming version 11.21. This is incredibly disturbing news since, beside League of Legends, chat is a feature that practically every online game includes. The rationale for this decision is that Riot wishes to clean up the League of Legends community, since there have been several instances of insults to opponents happening during matches, with even professional players becoming “victims” (or “culprits”).

Is it, however, really essential to delete the entire chat feature? Riot’s own employee, Riot EarthSlug, has to be unhappy and tweet about this issue when he believes that toxic is there, but that the benefits of this feature outweigh the drawbacks and that this is not the best option. The message, however, was eventually removed and replaced with a “softer” tweet.

Riot’s approach, even if well-intentioned, can have a significant impact on the growth of the League of Legends community following the implementation of the new system. But, if you preserve the chat function in a game like League of Legends, what can the company do to prevent toxic behaviors in the game?

Upgrade their report system

Riot has not been particularly good at removing player breaches such as toxic attitudes, AFK, game breaking, and so on. Many players have complained that Riot’s violation reporting system is sluggish and occasionally produces more significant errors, such as banning incorrect nicks and ignoring many offenses. This is reasonable, yet Riot must often be held accountable for “tolerating” the existence of these destructive views.
