Riot Mortdog, TFT lead designer, stated in a recent Twitch stream why bringing old sets back isn’t one of Riot’s idea
One of the most often expressed views among Teamfight Tactics fans is that classic sets should be brought back. With the game presently on its seventh set since its introduction in 2019, the fanbase has plenty of history to reflect back on.
TFT fans have been requesting the reintroduction of previous sets such as Fates and Galaxies. However, Riot Mortdog has some bad news for fans who have been requesting the revival of earlier sets.
During a recent Twitch stream, he revealed that he didn’t think it was a good idea.
Mortdog mentioned during the livestream that the return on investment for introducing previous game modes in TFT was just not worth it for the dev team because it could easily turn into a dead game within two weeks.
“I still believe that old sets are only ever going to be good for, like, a week or two at a time,”
“Let’s say right now we were to turn on Set 3 – how long do you think it would be before it turned into a dead game mode? I think the honest answer is like two weeks, tops.”
He also stated that bringing back previous sets would be extremely challenging from a technological sense. TFT’s development process is already extensive, and adding recurring game types on top of that would be extremely stressful for TFT’s development staff.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea personally”
“The reason a lot of people are asking for old sets is novelty and missed opportunity, and so leaving a set on just like doesn’t put us in that direction and is a lot harder tech wise than it sounds”
