The novel will center on the Ruination world event that occurred in 2021, with the hope of redeeming a story that received a mixed response from fans at the time. Different versions of the plot made it difficult for fans to follow a coherent story, and followers of League of Legends history frequently complained about tonal misunderstanding and unclear narrative choices. The novel by Anthony Reynolds represents a new opportunity for one of Runeterra’s most famous champions.

Riot Games first revealed League of Legends’ first official novel on Twitter, demonstrating the studio’s first step into full-length conventional storytelling projects. Anthony Reynolds returns after writing Garen: First Shield, a novella published in late 2020 that followed the captain of the Dauntless Vanguard in the aftermath of Sylas’ mage revolution. Ruination’s 400-page length gives many champions who were pushed to the side a chance to connect with this major lore event.

The novel Ruination will feature Kalista as she seeks an antidote to restore the poisoned Queen Isolde. As Viego attempts to conquer Runeterra, more room may be made available for Shadow Isles members who were overshadowed by the Sentinels of Light event, which was pushed through the League of Legends client. Kalista was significantly absent during the Ruination event, and this novel may provide her with an opportunity to settle a significant portion of her story.

Ruination will be released in the United States and the United Kingdom in September 2022. The novel will also be released in audiobook and digital format.
