It has been more than a month since Worlds 2020 officially began, now let’s take a look at the world’s biggest tournament of League of Legends.
Before Worlds: teams that couldn’t participate, teams that “almost” couldn’t participate, and teams who lost some of their members...
- Spring-champions that didn’t participate in Worlds 2020:
LCK: T1
LCS: Cloud9
CBLOL: KabuM! Esports
TCL: 1907 Fenerbahçe Esports
LLA: Team Knight
VCS: Team Flash (entry problem)
- VCS to be the most regrettable region since they weren’t able to take part in Worlds 2020:
Both GAM Esport and Team Flash couldn’t find themselves at Worlds 2020 because of their country entry policy. If they flew to Shanghai, they won’t be allowed to gain entry permit back to Viet Nam. Which led to a change in the tournament formula (from 24 teams participating to 22).
- The team that “almost” couldn’t come to Worlds 2020: Unicorn of Love
Unicorn Of Love “almost” didn’t take part in Worlds 2020 due to their VISA problem. Riot even had to call Gambit to ShangHai in case UOL can not come, but luckily, just at the last minute, UOL managed to handle their VISA problem and Gambit got a small gift as a thank from both Riot Games and UOL. - The team who lost their members: PSG Talon
PSG Talon participated at Worlds 2020 as the 2nd seed of PCS and had made their way up from the Play-in. However, both of their Junglers: Tank and River had to come back to Korea to extend their VISA. They had to take a 14-day quarantine when they come back to Korea and later, a 14-day quarantine in China. Unified later had to miss part of the Play-in for a similar reason. PSG Talon later had to “borrow” Kongyue, Uniboy from ahq Esports, and Dee from Machi Esports, despite all the difficulties, they performed extremely well at Play-in. - The fall of the “elder gods”: FPX (2019), iG (2018), T1 (2016)
During Worlds: countless surprises and the first time of everything.
- First Worlds with no audience!
- Big teams having trouble at Play-in: The first time one major region can not pass Play-in:
Countless surprises had occurred during the Play-in Stage of Worlds 2020, MAD Lions and LGD Gaming are expected to pass the Play-in easily, however, they had a poor performance during the Stage. Mad Lions became the first team from a major region to fail the Play-in Stage with a 3-2 loss against SUP while LGD received countless critics from their fans for being struggle at the Play-in. - The hardest Group became the easiest one:
For the first time, the 1st seed from a major region finishes Group Stage with a 0-6 record. TSM had a terrible performance at group C, where they had to face GEN, FNC, and LGD. There were many predictions that group C would likely be the hardest group stage, but the terrible performance from TSM made it easier to see the result. After the Quarterfinals, there wasn’t even any team from Group C get a chance to show up in the Semifinals, which made fans even more considering the 0-6 result from TSM. - The first 0-2 comeback in a BO5: For the first time in the Worlds history, a team winning 2-0 can not win the entire BO5.
TES marked their name as the first team to make a comeback from a 0-2 in their Quarterfinal against FNC. They got led 2-0 in the series, but, with the brilliant performance from Karsa, they managed to make an unbelievable 3-2 comeback. - The first seeds from major regions all show up at Semifinals.
