In the group stage of Worlds 2021, mid lane Tryndamere was only picked twice with a 0% win rate and then disappeared in the playoffs.
Before Worlds 2021, Tryndamere Mid lane was a popular choice among many players, including Doinb, ShowMaker, Chovy, and Faker, who all practiced this type of play. Tryndamere also featured often in the select and ban phase of the Play-In Round of Worlds 2021 and had a 60% win rate.
Tryndamere, on the other hand, only debuted twice in the Group Stage of Worlds 2021, in the hands of players Nisqy and Maple, with a victory rate of 0%. Mid lane Tryndamere has not appeared in any of the last six Quarterfinals and Semifinals matchups. Because Worlds 2021 only utilizes once in patch 11.19, we can’t blame Riot for the absence. So, what is the real reason that the world’s best teams have abandoned Tryndamere?
When we go back at the mid lane choices from Worlds 2021’s recent playoffs, we can observe the mages’ total domination. The world’s best teams favor champions like Azir, Ryze, LeBlanc, Zoe, and others. The common feature of this champion is the ability to control the lane extremely strong at a safe distance with his outstanding skills.
For Tryndamere, the strongest point of this champion in lane is the ability to exchange skills extremely well thanks to critical attacks and good healing. When confronted with mages, however, this strength is rarely emphasized because the opponent always maintains a safe distance and does not allow Tryndamere to attack easily. When the strongest point is not promoted, Tryndamere can not hold the lane and find a way to snowball the match.
Not stopping there, the human factor is also the reason why Tryndamere disappeared in the playoffs of Worlds 2021. In a high-level competition environment, players like Faker, ShowMaker, Scout, Bdd… have plenty of experience to create a lane when using the mage against Tryndamere. If you deliberately choose this champion, the odds are high that your mid lane will be completely overwhelmed and make the other 2 lanes under great pressure.
Because of the above drawbacks, picking Tryndamere in knockout matches is too risky, so the world’s top teams have chosen to ignore this champion. It is true that Tryndamere mid is very strong, but this playstyle is probably more suitable for a solo queue environment instead of appearing in important matches at Worlds 2021.
