From the Game Developers …
Certainly, many people have known that Ryze and Tryndamere are named after the two “big bosses” of Riot, right? But that is just the beginning since in League of Legends, there are a lot of champions that are named after Riot developers and employees. So who are those champions?
This couple is already really popular with LoL players
- Ezreal is named after the Champion Designer Colt “Ezreal” Hallam, and he is also the creator of Ezreal … in-game.
- Zilean is named after Tom “Zileas” Cadwell, Design Director of Riot Games.
- Volibear was named after Riot Games’ Product Developer, Travis “Volibar” George.
The two men above had quarreled drastically for Volibear, and this eventually led to a hidden passive between Volibear and Zilean that you can see in the game.
- Udyr is named after Steve “Udyr” Mieczkowski, also a Product Developer.
- The Guinsoo’s Rageblade is named after Steve “Guinsoo” Feak, the Champion Designer of Riot Games. He used to be a developer of the Dota map – the pioneer of the MOBA game, as well as creating many of the first generation champions in League of Legends.
- Shen will sometimes cast “Guinsoo” when using his Ultimate.
Annie is also named after… Guinsoo’s girlfriend, and she also has a teddy bear named Tibbers
- Similarly, Runaan’s Hurricane was also named after Devon “Runaan” Giehl, also Riot Games’ Designer.
- The Randuin’s Omen is also named after a former Riot employee, Robin “Randuin” Liao.
- Morellonomicon is taken from Ryan “Morello” Scott, former Champion Development team leader

- Wukong is named after Sun Wukong … oh this is no need to say much, since everyone has already known about this character.

- Ionia is an ancient land, the birthplace of Greek civilization.
- Nautilus is inspired by the submarine in Jules Verne novel’s Twenty Thousand Miles Under the Sea (this can be clearly seen in Abyssal Nautilus skin), while in Greek, Nautilus also means “Sailor.”

- Rylai’s Crystal Scepter is named after Rylai Crestfall, a character in both World of Warcraft and Dota 1.
- Similarly, Baron‘s full name – Baron Nashor (Baron here means “Baron”, its real name is Nashor), is the opposite of Roshan, the biggest monster in the DotA map, similar to Baron.
- Nashor’s Tooth were Baron’s fangs (probably after every game, the seller ran out to Baron cave, take the “Fangs” to sell)
- The Dead Man’s Plate is the arm armor that was attached to Gangplank after he almost died in the Burning Tides event, and that’s how the name “Dead Man” came from.

- Zac or Z.A.C stands for Zaun Amorphous Combatant.
- The Blade of the Ruined King is taken from the legend of the League of Legends. The Ruined King was the one who accidentally created the Black Mist and turned the Sacred Islands into a dark and deadly place known as the Shadow Isles.
And real life character...
- Some items’ names such as Sterak’s Gage, the Ohmwrecker and Luden’s Echo are named to honor the players who invited the most friends to play the League of Legends, in the “Refer-A-Friend” event.
- Heimerdinger is named after two famous scientists: Robert Oppenheimer – an American theoretical physicist and considered as “the father of the atomic bomb”, and Erwin Schrödinger – an Austrian physicist, consider as “father of quantum mechanics”.
Luckily, he still has not made any atom bomb in the game
