On September 29, Taichung District Police detained Curtis ‘Toyz’ Lau, the global champion of League of Legends, on suspicion of drug trafficking.
According to Taichung District Prosecutor’s Office, the former League of Legends pro player’s house had been searched and Toyz was hauled in for interrogation and drug testing. On suspicion of trafficking a Class 2 illegal drug in Taiwan, marijuana, he was arrested.
Possessing with the purpose of selling marijuana can result in a maximum of five-year term and a fine of up to 5 million New Taiwan currency (~ $200,000 USD) under the region’s Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, which was last modified in January 2020.
Toyz’s time back in League of Legends professional tournament
Toyz was best known for being the midlaner of Taipei Assassins, a Season 2 World Championship team. Toyz had had a long and illustrious esports career, coaching Fnatic and being a founding member of Hong Kong Esports.
His time back in Esports was unfortunate, Toyz retired for the first time in 2013 after winning the Worlds championship due to his increasing carpal tunnel syndrome. In 2015, he returned to Hong Kong to establish Hong Kong Esports, although only for a short time.
Toyz left Hong Kong Esports later that year then he established Raise Gaming in the LMS promotional league in 2016. Raise would be promoted to the LMS with the help of Toyz. After a rebrand to G-Rex, Toyz continued on as a coach.
Toyz has become a popular YouTuber since his last retirement. He has almost 700,000 YouTube subscribers and the facts behind the accusations are unknown, as is why a former video game coach and YouTuber would get involved in drug trafficking.
