Riot Games’ upcoming deathmatch game mode, which will be played on a new map, has given League fans another reason to be excited
In a recent developer post, Riot revealed numerous details about the new mode, which will feature four teams of two in 2vs2 deathmatch-style rounds. This mode is expected to consume a significant amount of resources from League’s game modes team, so players should not expect any major updates to the existing modes until the second half of this year.
“Whether it’s new or updated champions or items, or invisible back end changes, these all take quite a bit of time and focus from our team,”
In this mode, champions gain power as the match continues by purchasing items, gaining levels, and acquiring special Augments between combat rounds. A team is eliminated after losing enough matches, enabling them to instantly queue up for a new battle. The idea was inspired by Teamfight Tactics’ Double Up mode, allowing players to team up with a buddy for a new experience.
Augments are huge upgrades that provide players with unique builds for each champion in the game, depending on whether they want to amplify a champion’s current strengths or dive into something completely different. Also, Riot gave some crazy example of these Augments-like features to be included in the game mode such as:
- Sylas who casts Lissandra W every 5 seconds
- Ekko with 500 attack range
- A Kai’Sa who dives the enemy team, dies immediately, and then creates a huge explosion post mortem that wipes out a huge chunk of her two enemies’ remaining health
Riot’s goal with this game mode is to achieve a particular set of objectives that will help to create a much more satisfying experience. By quickly putting players into PvP combat and reducing time spent and trapped in an unwinnable game, they can push the boundaries of gameplay in unprecedented ways.
Currently, there is no set release date for Nexus Blitz’s comeback, but the latter part of the year should be considered.
