Riot Aims to Develop an Advanced Methodology to Minimize Game-ruining Behavior

Game-ruining behavior can not be prevented from ever happening, so it’s important that Riot would ensure the damage is minimized for its victims.

League of Legends product manager for competitive gameplay Cody “Codebear” Germain informed fans in today’s Dev blog post about behavioral improvements and upcoming features.

Riot recently released a “two-patch experiment“, introducing a muting and reporting feature for Champion Select. The company’s next goal is to target intentional feeding and AFKing, with the aim of reducing its frequency and mitigating the harm to the players affected.

“We’re developing enhanced automated detection methodology specifically for intentional feeding and idle/AFK behaviors to confidently verify when these behaviors have occurred,” Codebear said. “We’re designing improvements to the actions that occur when we identify AFK behaviors.”

Riot is creating an enhanced automated methodology to better identify the disturbing behavior. It would make it easier to automatically ban the culprit without unjustly punishing a player who is having a poor game.

The company is also attempting to strengthen measures taken when an intentional feeder or AFK player directly trying to lose their team’s game. This involves “enhanced penalty actions” for the griefer and fewer effects on their teammates.

Also on the way is an updated Summoner Code, which will “clearly call out” disruptive situations and “clearly indicate the consequences for those actions.”
