After finally implementing 2 step authentication earlier this year, Riot is taking the next step to protect customers’ data: deleting some very old inactive accounts

“We use your data to improve your experience, and if you don’t need it, we don’t either” – Riot
The intent behind this move is to keep only necessary data, to respect the players’ decision and privacy should they decide to leave the world of Runeterra. Or to save Riot the cost of storing them. We both win!
What is an inactive account and which ones are being deleted?
Accounts that had not had any login activity across any of Riot’s games, applications or web properties for over 3 years are considered inactive
However only ones that fit ALL the criteria below will be subject to termination:
- Account is inactive
- Account did not purchase any game currency in its lifetime
- Account did not receive any game currency in its lifetime
- Account has played fewer than 20 hours
- Account does not own any rare limited edition game entitlements
You’ll be notified via registered email should your account be eligible for deletion over the next few months. Players then can choose to opt out of the account deletion by contacting Riot’s Player Support and follow their instruction!
Overall it’s a reasonable and necessary step to take in an increasingly insecure cyberspace where people’s data are being stolen and either sold or used for scamming activities. It’s nice to see Riot reinvesting efforts into improving player experience inside and outside the game, most recent one being Project Stryker partnered with Amazon.
