The news came shortly after Misfits announced their exit from LoL competitive scene including LEC and LFL
Confirmed today by official statement from Riot as well as Misfits Gaming themselves, Team Heretics will start their LEC journey in 2023. Current Misfits squads will continue to play till the end of 2022.
Team Heretics is a rising squad hailing from the Spanish LVP Superliga. They had a short stint in competitive LoL back in 2017 and returned to the game in 2022, finishing 8th in their debut season in LVP Spring 2022. They’re currently tied for 1st place in LVP Summer and have enjoyed a surge in popularity among Spanish community.
Since their inception in 2016, Misfits has been a regular fixture in the European LEC.
Misfits Gaming is an American esports organization based in Miami, Florida founded in 2016 by Ben Spoont, Laurie Silvers and Mitchell Rubenstein. They made their entrance into European LoL scene in LCS Sping 2017.
Their most memorable season certainly was 2017 when they competed in Worlds 2017 as EU’s 3rd Seed and managed to take eventual runner-ups SKT Telecom T1 to a 5th game in the Quarterfinals. Formidable achievement for an European squad considering the dominance of Chinese and Korean LoL.
Since then however, the squad struggled to make any mark on the scene or other notable achievements. Their departure comes as little surprise to anyone following European scene.
Misfits Gaming Group’s (MGG) official statement reads:
For MGG, the move continues an additional step in a larger strategy to expand more of its focus on fueling creative talent alongside fielding competitive teams. MGG has increased its emphasis on partnering with top creators from the gaming and streaming community and working with them to build projects they’re passionate about.
MGG will remain minority partner in the team as well as maintaining their competitive presence in Overwatch, Call of Duty and VALORANT. The move marks their shifting focus from esports to gaming creators.
The LEC will receive a 4th Seed in this year’s Worlds after LCL was cancelled due to the war in Ukraine.
