After regrettably losing the LPL Spring Split to RNG, Top Esports bounced back even stronger at summer
Consisting of 2 former Worlds champions, the Chinese squad made the Grand Finals of the Spring playoffs but were defeated narrowly 2-3 by eventual MSI winners RNG. Motivated by the loss, Top Esports pushed forward and finished 1st in the Summer Group Stage with an impressive 14-2 series score in the extremely competitive LPL.
Their hard work is rewarded with a spot in the playoffs Upper bracket Semi-finals where they are only 1 series from qualifying to Worlds. Unfortunately, standing in their way is none other than last year’s champions EDward Gaming. EDG has had a rough season since, but saw some sparks after eliminating FunPlus Phoenix and RNG, determined to defend their title.
In a full 5-game series, Top Esports overcame the champions off the back of stellar performance from LPL rookie toplaner Wayward
Despite Viper’s formidable efforts, EDG couldn’t stop a surging Top Esports from claiming their well-earned spot at Worlds after a 2-1 lead. Wayward’s rock solid Gnar enabled his teammates to take the final 2 games. It’s hard to believe that this is Wayward’s 1st season in the LPL after being promoted from TES’s academy team. Top Esports really knows how to nurture a top-tier toplaner!
With this victory, TES are guaranteed at least 2nd seed from the LPL and will start Worlds 2022 from the Group Stage. They’ll face the winners between LNG and JD Gaming in the upper bracket finals on August 26.
LoL esports’ official Twitter congratulated TES for their win
TES joins G2 Esports, GenG and T1 as the first teams to qualify for this year’s biggest event.
